Ocimum basilicum, Basil, Sweet basil.  An annual culinary herb. Grows to 20 inches / 50 cm high and 10 inches / 25.5 cm wide with entire or toothed, green leaves to 5 cm long, lax spikes of tubular, 2-lipped, sometimes lilac-tinged white flowers in terminal racemes 3 inches / 7.62 cm long in summer. Does best in warm, sunny, sheltered sites with light-textured, fertile soils that drain well, liberal watering during dry periods. Used as a condiment in Mediterranean food and salads. Known to have medicinal qualities: reduces inflammation and the risk of arthritis, heart disease, and bowel issues. NOTE: Please be certain of their identification before consuming plant parts, and that no pesticides are present.
