Hardy in zones 7-9, there are numerous species and varieties of Lavender. They are evergreen shrubs with oppositely arranged leaves and long-stalked spikes of fragrant, white, pink, blue or purple flowers mostly in summer. Sizes range from dwarf to tall, but all are attractive to bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. Use in butterfly, water-thrifty or herb gardens as well as informal hedges. Provide full sun in well-draining soil. Thrives along cool coastal, desert, mountain or inland areas, but not hot, humid climates. Water sparingly to keep soil barely moist and withhold during rainy season. Feeding is usually unnecessary. Prune back by 1/3 immediately after bloom cycle to maintain compact growth. NOTE: Please do not consume plant parts without first making sure of their identification and that they are free of pesticides
