Marigold. In northern climates they are grown as summer annuals and will die back with the first hard frosts. Does best in sun and moist soils that drain well. Feed with a slow release or organic fertilizer formulated for blooming annuals.Depending on the species, marigold foliage has a musky, pungent scent, though some varieties have been bred to be scentless. It is said to deter some common insect pests, as well as nematodes. Marigold species are often used in companion planting for tomato, eggplant, chili pepper, tobacco, and potato.
