Fennel is an erect perennial, but some varieties are also grown as annual vegetables (called Florence fennel). Plant grow up to 6' high and 18"-24" wide with finely divided leaves, large flat heads of small yellow flowers in summer. Does best in sun and fertile soil that drains well. Bulbous base is edible as are the fronds. Seeds are harvested after flowers have finished blooming and they, too, are used in cooking and marinades.
