Zones 3-9. Columbine. Spurred flowers rise above the foliage of clump-forming perennial plants which tend to be short-lived, but reseed readily. Lacy leaves with erect or nodding flowers come in a rainbow of colors in spring to early summer. Beautiful in a woodland landscape or planted en masse in well draining soil. Attracts birds and butterflies. Do best in light shade, with regular water and feed with a slow release or organic fertilizer. Cut back spent flowers and their stems for a repeat bloom. Plants are short-lived and should be replaced every 3 to 4 years.
