Commonly known as 'Spider plant'. Native to tropical and southern Africa (where it is also known as 'Hen and Chickens'), but has become naturalized in other parts of the world, including western Australia. This plant is a reliable indoor performer which is also used for summer bedding schemes. Easy to propagate, it almost does it for you. An evergreen perennial so if used as a bedding plant, don't throw it away for fear of it growing and naturalizing. Just over winter it and the following spring bring it back out (and its numerous offspring). Indoors does best in bright indirect light, water when the soil feels dry down to the first knuckle and feed with a slow release or organic fertilizer formulated for container houseplants. Outdoors, does best in partial or full shade. Will be fine in position of early morning sun and shaded for the rest of the day.  Does not tolerate frost and long periods of freezing temperatures. Untidy, bleached and scorched when planted in full sun.
